It pairs cleanly with production renderers like V-Ray and Corona, which is exactly why archviz studios standardize on it. The trade-offs: it’s Windows-only, the system requirements are high, and the interface takes real time to learn.

Cinema 4D, ZBrush, SketchUp and Fusion 360 — the specialistsThere’s no single program you just model in anymore. 3ds Max is our backbone, Blender runs alongside it, and we finish some models in Cinema 4D when a client’s files come in that way. For cars or background pieces we’ll generate a base with AI, then texture and animate it in Unreal. The tool follows the job — not the other way around.

Match the tool to three things: your field (archviz, product, film, printing), your budget, and — most overlooked — the renderer and pipeline the model has to feed into next. A model isn’t finished when it looks right in the modeling app; it has to open cleanly in whatever software renders or animates it. For architectural work specifically, Blender still isn’t the default — the pair we reach for is 3ds Max plus D5 Render. And the line between modeling and rendering is blurrier than it looks: you almost always refine geometry inside the final software, whether that’s turning upholstery into real mesh or building a detail as volumetric texture.
The costliest mistake we see: a client pays one shop for modeling, gets back a STEP file that won’t open or breaks, then tries to hand it to a visualization studio for rendering. Ninety-nine percent of the time that model has to be rebuilt from scratch — so they pay for the work twice. Keep modeling and rendering under one roof, or at least agree the handoff format before anyone starts.
