A 360° Supplement Jar Spin and a Campaign Built on It

Simple Science needed a 360° view of its magnesium jar for the product page. We rendered four camera setups as transparent PNG sequences, then took the same model into more than thirty campaign stills, from studio colourways to everyday scenes on the train, at the gym and at home.

Client & Market Context

A Minimal Jar Whose Detail Only Shows When It Moves

Simple Science sells a magnesium supplement in a minimal jar with a matte black lid. The brand identity is debossed into the lid rather than printed, and the label carries the dose and the ingredient panel in small type around the circumference.

That is a hard product to sell from a single still. A front-on packshot shows one third of the label and flattens the deboss into a faint texture. The detail that justifies the price — the mark in the lid, the matte finish, the weight of the closure — only becomes visible when the jar turns under moving light. And a spin only lives on the product page: social, paid campaigns and the rest of the site needed the jar in the places people actually carry it and take it.

Business Challenge

A Spin for Every Background, a Campaign for Every Channel

A 360° spin is usually delivered as a video or a baked image sequence with the studio background burned in. That works until the page it sits on is not white — a dark campaign page, a coloured section, a marketplace module — and then the whole sequence has to be produced again. The campaign round had the opposite problem: the jar had to keep its identity in bright colour sets, dark studios and everyday scenes, with the label and the deboss reading the same in every one.

  • Render a full rotation with the label legible at every angle
  • Keep the debossed lid readable as the light travels across it
  • Deliver frames with a true alpha channel, not a burned-in backdrop
  • Provide more than one camera setup for different page layouts
  • Place the same jar in studio colourways and lifestyle scenes without changing the product

A spin with a background baked in is a single-use asset. A spin with an alpha channel is a component the brand places anywhere, which is the difference between one deliverable and a reusable one.

Project Objectives

What the Spin and the Campaign Had to Deliver

  • Let a shopper read the full label without leaving the product page

  • Show the finish and the deboss that a flat photograph loses

  • Work unchanged on a white listing and on a dark brand page

  • Give social and paid campaigns the jar in real-life settings

Strategic CGI Approach

Light the Finish, Not the Background

With no backdrop in the frame, everything the viewer reads has to come from the product itself. We lit for the materials rather than for the set: a soft key that travels across the matte lid to raise the deboss, a rim that separates the jar from whatever sits behind it, and a contact shadow rendered as its own pass so it can be kept, softened or dropped depending on the page.

Key Visual Decisions

One Spin, Then the Jar in Every Colour and Setting

Production Process

From Label Artwork to a Spin and a Campaign

  • Modeling the Jar and the Deboss

The jar, lid thread and debossed mark were modeled from the artwork and dimensions. The deboss is real geometry rather than a normal map, because at close range a faked depression reads wrong the moment the light moves.
  • Turntable Setup

Four cameras at different heights and distances, each with its own full rotation. Lighting was rigged to the product rather than to a set, so the whole sequence renders against transparency with a separate shadow pass.
  • Sequence Delivery

Frames were delivered as numbered transparent PNGs for the viewer, plus mp4 cuts for pages that prefer a looping video. Both come from the same render, so there is one source of truth for how the product looks. The same model and materials then went into the campaign round: studio colourways, lifestyle scenes and close-ups, rendered as stills for the product page, social and paid use.

Key Insight

A 360° spin rendered against transparency becomes a component the brand reuses on every page, and the model behind it keeps producing campaign imagery long after the spin ships.

FAQ about this supplement jar 360° spin

What is a 360° product spin?
A 360° product spin is a sequence of renders taken at even intervals around a product, played back so the viewer can rotate it. On a supplement jar it lets a shopper read the full label and see the finish without leaving the product page.
How many frames does a supplement jar spin need?
It depends on how smooth the rotation has to feel. This project delivered four sequences of roughly 110 to 140 frames each; around 36 frames is enough for a stepped spin, while a smooth drag benefits from more.
Why render the frames with a transparent background?
Because the background stops being part of the asset. The same sequence then works on a white marketplace listing, a dark campaign page or a coloured section without re-rendering, and the contact shadow can be kept or dropped per page.
Can a 360° spin be made from photographs?
Yes, with a physical turntable rig, but every change means another session, transparency has to be masked frame by frame, and a matte deboss is difficult to light consistently across a full rotation. Rendering avoids all three.
Does a spin slow down a product page?
Not if it is delivered properly. Frames are compressed and loaded on demand, and a short mp4 loop can stand in until the shopper interacts. The heavier risk is an unoptimised video, not the sequence itself.
What do you need to build one?
The container dimensions or a dieline, the label artwork, and a note on the finishes — matte, gloss, foil, deboss. See supplement rendering for the full list.
Can the model built for a spin be used for campaign images?
Yes. In this project the jar model, label artwork and materials built for the spin were reused for more than thirty campaign stills, from studio colour sets to lifestyle scenes, without rebuilding the product.
