If we think about it and refer to historical facts, we can see that hardship and adversity have indeed served as catalysts for many great events: Mozart composed the great “Requiem” in the last months of his life, Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake” was considered boring, Beethoven wrote “Für Elise” when he was almost completely deaf.

The Second World War is a ХХ-century tragedy that claimed millions of lives. Even after many years, the events of this terrible historical event still bring tears and a lack of understanding as to how the civilised world could allow it to happen. Every country has its own story of hard struggle and great victory that will forever remain in the heart of every human being. One of these countries is, of course, Belgium.

If you look at Belgium from a historical perspective, you can see what a hard fate it had to suffer by being placed in a not very favourable location. Nevertheless, it has managed to survive and preserve many historical buildings and, of course, its unique appearance. Moreover, Belgium has developed a very interesting business card called comics.

Today, Belgium is one of those countries where comics are considered real works of art. Belgium is the birthplace of Tintin and everyone’s favourite Smurfs. The capital of Belgium, Brussels, is famous for its neighbourhoods entirely dedicated to these characters. However, they didn’t come about easily: we probably wouldn’t have been able to admire them if it hadn’t been for the Second World War.
Comics were first created in Belgium at the beginning of the last century. They looked like little jokes and took up no more than a newspaper page. Then came the youth magazines, whose editors were probably very fond of comics and devoted several pages to them. In 1929, the story of the inquisitive correspondent Tintin was published and the world fell in love. And then Belgium started importing comics from the United States. These were stories about Mickey Mouse and other Disney characters. But with the outbreak of the Second World War, the comic imports stopped completely, and this opened the way for many talented Belgian artists. They started telling their stories again. At first, they tried to imitate the cool works of their American counterparts, such as the adventures of Superman, but then they found their own way and started to create unique and different comics. Their key feature is that the main characters are ordinary people, like you or someone you know. They get into funny situations and try to find a way out. For example, there is a comic book “Gaston” about an office clerk, who absolutely does not want to work and because of this always gets into funny or embarrassing situations. And, of course, there are the Smurfs, beloved story by adults and children worldwide.
